Unmasking the Genesis 3 Dilemma: Consequences Explored
Hello friends, welcome or welcome back. I am glad that I’m able to meet you like this. In our last video, we ended with a question: What are the consequences of man’s fall? We are going to discuss that in this video. If this is the first time you are visiting my channel, this video is part of a series. Watching the videos in order will be more beneficial to understand what we are discussing. So, after watching this video, please consider watching other videos too.
Now, let us get into this video. In our last video, we saw that God told Adam that if he eats the forbidden fruit, he will die the day he eats the fruit. Satan came along and said no, he will not die if he eats the fruit, and even it will be beneficial for them as their eyes will be opened. But when Adam and Eve ate the fruit, they did not die, and indeed, their eyes were opened. Now, who is the liar here, God or Satan? That is what we are going to explore today. This video is going to be an interesting one, so let us continue.
If you are to understand what God meant when he said they will die the day they eat the fruit, we have to see what happened after they ate the fruit. The moment they ate the fruit, their eyes were opened, and for the first time, they realized that they were naked. But the interesting thing to see is they used leaves to cover their nakedness. Even before they ate the fruit, they were naked too, but now they wanted to cover their nakedness. That shows something has changed now; they are ashamed of their nakedness.
What happened when God came to meet them? As usual, they ran from Him and hid themselves in the bushes. Why? They feared the presence of God. God used to meet them in the Eden Garden, and they were never afraid. In fact, they liked the presence of God. Their relationship with God was excellent, but now they were not able to stand in the presence of God. This indicates a breach in their relationship with God. This is what God meant when he said they will die on the day they eat the fruit.
Now, look at the word death. We try to understand death by our terms, but when God said death, he said it in a completely different manner. When we think of death, we see it as an end, a cease to exist. But God is an eternal being; he never ceased to exist. So, the concept of death from his perspective is completely different. God is a creator of life; he is the source of life. As branches to the trees, man has to be connected with God to live in a spiritual sense. So, to be connected with God is living, and to be separated from God is dying.
The moment Adam and Eve ate that fruit, they were separated from God spiritually, and they died spiritually. It means they were no longer being connected to God. That is what God meant when he said you will die on the day you eat the fruit. The consequences, as we see, they were afraid of God’s presence, and they were hiding. Let us keep on exploring and see what happened afterwards.
God called Adam, “Where are you?” and Adam answered because he was naked, afraid, and hiding. God asked the next question, “Did you eat the fruit I forbade you to eat?” Put yourself in this situation now, and what should be the right answer for this question? I’ll give you a moment. The right answer should be, “Yes, Lord, I ate the fruit.” But do you know what Adam said? Adam said, “The woman you gave me, gave me the fruit; that is why I ate.” Do you understand the problem here? Adam is not interested in accepting his fault; instead, he blames his wife. We not only see the breach in the relationship with God and man; now, we see the breach in the relationship with man and his wife. The trust between them is already broken.
Then God asked Eve, “Did you eat the fruit?” Eve, too, doesn’t want to accept her fault. She said, “The serpent deceived me; that is why I ate.” Do you know what God probably expected from them? God simply expected them to accept their fault, that’s all. But they were reluctant to accept their fault. Then God turned to the serpent; he was so angry that Satan did this. So, he cursed the serpent. As he was cursing the serpent, he gave a promise. God said, “I will put enmity between you and woman, between your offspring and her offspring.” He promised that one day a man will come through a woman, and he will crush the head of that serpent. This actually means a man directly coming from a woman is going to end what Satan destroyed through this act.
Then God turned to Adam and Eve and started to tell them the consequences of their disobedience. First, he turned to Eve and told her that from now on, her childbirth will be so challenging and painful, and she will be selfish, always trying to overcome her husband. Her willingness to obey her husband is reduced. Then he turned to Adam and told him that from now on, he has to work hard to earn his food. Even though he will work hard, the ground will be cursed, and it will bring forth thorns and thistles, which will make the work even harder. Finally, he told both of them that they will return to the Earth they were taken from, meaning they will die physically too. A leaf that detached from the tree cannot be put back and attached to the tree. The leaf may look green now, but eventually, it will dry. Separated from the relationship with God is like that. Though Adam and Eve look green now, as of now, they look like they are living, but they are not connected to the source of life. So eventually, they will die physically too. More sadly, God told them to leave the Garden of Eden.
Disbelief in God’s word brought disobedience. Disobedience brought spiritual death. Spiritual death brought physical death. So, these are the consequences of the fall. Because of all this, now they have to live their life outside of the garden, which they were never meant to live in. In our next video, we are going to see what their life outside of the garden is like. Believe me, it’s a tragedy you don’t want to miss.
