Why Bible Leaves the Question of God’s Existence Unanswered?

In the beginning, God… This is the first sentence of the Bible. When we look at the Bible and the God of the Bible, it starts with the fact that God exists.

So when we look at the fact of the existence of God, it gives answers to so many confusions in the world and even among Christians. Any person who carefully watches this world and the happenings in it will end up with a few questions. Who am I? What is the purpose of my life? What is the purpose of this Earth? What is life? What is death? What will happen after my death? Why is there so much pain? Why is there so much injustice?

So, these are the questions asked by so many people throughout history. Well, there are so many answers to these questions. But the Bible explains a God of creation, a failed humanity, and what this God of creation did to redeem this failed humanity.

Remember the questions I told you earlier? We can only find the right answers when we understand who the true God is, what is the purpose of his creation, and why he created humanity. The whole Bible is all about God and His creation, even more clearly, God and what he is doing with his creation. What is his nature? What are his characters? How does he function? What is he doing with his creation? The Bible explains all these questions because God is the center focus and the subject matter of the Bible.

This Bible study is also focused on God. So, why do we have to put the Bible in the center of our Bible study? Because only the Bible is God’s revealed word. 2 Timothy 3:16 says the word of God is God-breathed, which means all of God’s words are actually given by God himself. The technical word for that is revelation. Revelation means revealing something that is not revealed before, unfolding something that has been hidden before.

Since we humans cannot know and understand God on our own, he revealed himself. He explained about himself, his nature, his characters, and all about his doings. God revealed himself in his word.

If we have to understand the authenticity of God’s word, which is the Bible, we have to look at some information related to the Bible. It was written roughly between 1,500 BC to 100 AD, around a 1,600-year span. The Bible is divided into two parts: the Old Testament and the New Testament. There are 39 books in the Old Testament and 27 books in the New Testament, making a total of 66 books in the Bible. So, the Bible is a book of books.

These books of the Bible were not written by one person, in one particular place, in one particular time period. Different persons, empowered by God, wrote these books in different places, different time periods, and even in different languages. In many situations, the human authors of the Bible were unknown to each other, considering the 1,600 years span. So many of them didn’t know each other, and even their economic traditions were different. There were kings, common people, fishermen, farmers, doctors—different kinds of people. Some of the books were even written on different continents.

Though the human authors of the Bible differ in so many things, when the Bible was put together and when we read the Bible, we can see the amazing correspondence between the books of the Bible. All the books are focused on one person—God himself—and they focus on one message.

So, as we go through this Bible study, we are going to find out who is that one God and what is his one message he wants us to understand. May God help with that.
